Property Tax Appeals in Washington

How it works in Washington

Washington counties revalue property on their own cycles (many annually, some less often) and mail a Notice of Value when your assessment changes. You can appeal that value to your county's Board of Equalization, an independent body separate from the Assessor's office.

Deadline
The deadline to appeal is the later of July 1st of the assessment year, or 60 days from the mailing date printed on your value notice. Confirmed directly from King County's own appeal page. Note this is 60 days, longer than Texas's 30-day rule.

Terminology

Washington uses "appeal," filed with the county Board of Equalization, not the Assessor's office directly.

  • Late filings are described by King County as "almost always rejected." There's little flexibility once the deadline passes.
